Lewis and Clark. Their Expedition. Their Discoveries...
On May 2o, 1804, four dozen men, including William Lewis and Merriweather Clark, set of on an expedition through the Louisiana Territory in hopes of finding a water route that would link the Pacific Ocean with the Mississippi River system. Following mainly the Jefferson River, they traveled, occasionally coming in contact with Indians that either were friendly and accepted bartering, or were a violent enemy.
While on their journey, Clark looked over the men and mapped the route as Lewis gathered specimens of plants and animal along with making scientific observations. During that winter, Lewis and Clark hired a guide, Toussaint Charbonneau, and his wife Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman that could interpret her peoples' language to help them. Eventually, they reached their destination (St. Louis) on September 23, 1806 and were welcomed back as heroes.
